MOSMA's Edu Sessions are a component of our Audio in Media programme and run every year from September to June. We are proud to collaborate with local talent in Manitoba, and encourage musicians and bands of all genres to join our roster and be a part of our educational experience.
How it Works

Step 2
Tell us about your project and identify your availability for session times.
Step 3
Artists on our Roster will receive an email from a MOSMA instructor regarding session bookings.

We have been lucky to host many talented artists from Manitoba and continue to do so every year, including; Greg Macpherson, Mariachi Ghost, Jess Ayre, Paige Drobot, Northern Royals and so many more!

Instructor Lead Sessions
A MOSMA Instructor will guide students through the recording session.

What software is used in the programme?To reflect industry standards in audio production; we use and teach Avid's Pro Tools digital audio workstation. Students also have access to Ableton Live, Propellarhead’s Reason, Native Instruments, Audiokinetic Wwise, Unity, iZotope RX, Apple's Logic Pro. Our studios and workstations are also equipped with third-party plug-ins from McDSP, Massey plugins, Valhalla DSP, Sound Toys, Brainworx, Waves, SSL, Focusrite, Oeksound, Pro Sound Effects, and more.

What are some examples of student projects?Student projects include multi-track recording sessions with local musicians, radio ad production, and sound design for animated films and video games. Students will participate in group work and individual projects with the guidance of their instructors, and progress to fully independent and self-managed projects.

Does the Audio in Media programme qualify for student funding?Yes. MOSMA is a Registered Private Vocational Institution under The Private Vocational Institutions Act. It is also designated by Manitoba Student Aid which means students may be eligible for funding via Canada Student Loans in any province or territory and or Financial Institutions (RESPs, Student Bank Loans, Manitoba Employment & Training, First Nations Bands, etc.).

What experience do I need to apply to the Audio in Media diploma programme?No specific experience is required to apply, but any background in audio or music is a bonus! While being a musician isn't a requirement, any exposure to recording or technical skills can be helpful. If you're looking to gain experience, we also offer introductory short-courses that some of our full-time students take before enrolling in the Audio in Media diploma programme.

How are students graded?Students are evaluated during the programme through: written tests lab assignments practical tests practicum projects Students must achieve a 70% (seventy percent) or higher to successfully complete the Audio in Media programme and receive their diploma.

Do I need a laptop and Pro Tools while in school?We do not require students to have a laptop or any of the programs we utilize, as all projects are assigned and conducted within our facility; although students have found it helpful to have this software at home for additional practice.

What will I receive at the end of the programme?A diploma is issued to students who achieve a seventy percent or higher upon completion of the programme. As of 2019, MOSMA became an AVID Learning Partner and its students can achieve Pro Tools User Certification. Students will also develop a personal portfolio exhibiting various projects they have completed throughout the programme.

How long has MOSMA been teaching Audio Engineering?MOSMA has been training students for careers in the audio production industry since 1995.

What career paths in audio engineering can I pursue after graduating?Audio in Media grads are qualified to work in any position within the Audio Production Industry. This includes careers such as; Live Sound Engineer Front of House Engineer Monitor Engineer Recording Studio Engineer Mixing Engineer Mastering Engineer Sound Designer Composer Location Recordist Boom Operator Radio Producer AV Technician

How much study time outside of class is expected?Students are expected to dedicate two hours of study time per day. This includes assigned reading from the Audio in Media textbook, reviewing class notes and practical activities such as technical ear training.

Who can apply? What genres of music are acceptable?Everyone is welcome to join our roster for Edu sessions by submitting the form below. We accept applicants from any/all genres of music, solo artists and full bands.

Is there a cost involved?There is no application fee associated with Edu Recording Sessions.

What happens with our music when mixing is completed?You will be provided with a complete multi-track data backup of the session in its entirety on your own hard drive.

What happens if we need to cancel?Please do not apply for a session if you are uncertain of your availability. In the event that you need to cancel, provide as much notice as possible.

Do I own my recordings/the copyright to my music?Yes. MOSMA has no rights to your music although the project may be used in the future in an educational capacity.

Is there back line equipment available? Can we store our gear?MOSMA will provide equipment required for recording (microphones, stands, headphones, etc.). Bands are required to bring their own musical instruments. Instrument storage is limited and must be approved by staff in advance.

Do I have to be available to mix with the students?We encourage collaboration between artists and students but it is not mandatory if schedule does not allow. We would, however, ask that feedback be given on the first draft of a mix, which will be sent via email. Revisions will be made based on artist feedback on mixes.

So I can make an album at MOSMA for free?MOSMA's Edu sessions are primarily intended to provide our students with an educational experience. Completion (tracked and mixed) of one or two songs is a reasonable expectation within the time allocated for these sessions.

When do Edu Sessions take place?Edu Sessions take place throughout our Audio in Media programme. Once you have joined our roster, an instructor will contact you regarding sessions dates and scheduling.
